The Opala Basket - Hawaii's Alternate Energy Solutions

UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO

The Opala Basket was created from the basic idea of restoring the ancient ways of Polynesian life.  Born on the Big Island of Hawaii, by the Keliiholokai Ohana and Friends, our philosophies of nurturing life back into our islands are created through unique methods of alternative energy production. The Wind Catcher, provides a cleaner energy source by the elimination of fossil fuel usage. Waste-to-Energy through Thermal Reduction reduces the size of Municipal Solid Waste by up to 85%, reducing the need for landfills and simultaneously creating a commercially valued by-product. The conversion of sugarcane to Biofuels can supply green fuel for future automobiles and revive Hawaii’s sugarcane industry, creating employment opportunities in our weakened economy.

On January 31, 2008, Governor Lingle signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Department of Energy for the Hawaii-DOE Clean Energy Initiative. The goal is to decrease energy demand and accelerate use of renewable, indigenous energy resources in Hawaii in residential, building, industrial, utility, and transportation end-use sectors, so that efficiency and renewable energy resources will be sufficient to meet 70% of Hawaii’s energy demand by 2030.
